Less Known yet Magnificent Gemstones   by Arthur markham

In the gem industry, there are stones that generally stand out from the rest in terms of its monetary value and quality. Pearls, Diamonds and gold are some of those. But there are also stones that are less known to many yet exhibit the same brilliance and luminosity like the popular stones. Here are some of those stones that are usually overlooked but are as valuable as other gem stones are.

Fire Opal

This precious stone are only found in the lands of Mexico. This stone belongs to one of the varieties of opals. There is the orange or red opal; there are also translucent yellow and brownish opals. It is worth noting that all opals are naturally delicate gemstones. Delicate means stressful or easily scratched or knocked. That is why these stones are commonly made into brooches, pendants and earrings and should be handled carefully. If you are born on the month of October, this stone is believed to be your birthstone. The most expensive fire opals are those from Mexico known for its intense red-orange color.

Chrysocolla

Often confused with turquoise, chrysocollas are known for their greasy vitreous luster and unique color. Chrysocollas are often mixed with other secondary copper minerals to make a magnificent display of patterns and mixtures on its surface. Ancient people believe that chrysocolla stones can alleviate feelings of nervousness, guilt and fear. It is also believed to crystallize feelings of love, tolerance and happiness towards other people. Do you know that musicians and singers around the world use chrysocolla stones as lucky charms? Now you know.

Pietersite

Pietersite gemstones were first believed to be only found in Namibia, though in 1990′s, similar minerals were unearthed in the Hunan province of China. Most pietersite stones come in colors of gold, brown, rusty reds and blue. Blue pietersite often have baby blue to dark midnight blue shades while the Chinese pietersites occurs in red or gold. The surface of a pietersite oftentimes looks chaotic with streaks of colors scattered in different directions. But it is this strange pattern that perfectly matches pietersites to be made as cabochons.

Iolite

Fine iolites are extremely rare to find because they are strikingly beautiful stones with good clarity and pleochronic properties. Pleochronic means a stone displays spectrum of colors depending on which side it is viewed. In earlier times, the Vikings used this stone as polarizing lens making them see through the haze and seeing the exact location of the sun on overcast skies. The rule in choosing this gem stone is that the richer the blue color the better or purer it is.
